LANCE is pleased to inform you that the following VIIRS 6-minute granule data products will be available from November 1, 2016:
  • Land Surface Reflectance (VNP09_NRT )
  • Active Fire data / Thermal Anomalies (VNP14IMG_NRT) and
  • Gridded Land Surface Reflectance (VNP09GA_NRT)

They will be available on ftp://nrt3.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/allData/5000/

and about one week later on ftp://nrt4.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/allData/5000/

LANCE VIIRS products are expected to be of same quality as operational VIIRS products from Land SIPS with the exception of occasional error in the session based processing from error in the session based data or artifacts in data acquired during maneuvers.

What is a granule?
A granule is the smallest aggregation of data that can be independently managed (described, inventoried, and retrieved). Granules have their own metadata model and support values associated with the additional attributes defined by the owning collection.
Why the switch from 5-minute to 6-minute granules?
The first NRT VIIRS products were made as 5-min granules to be compatible with the MODIS 5-minute granules. However, the standard granule period for VIIRS is 6 minutes, and so the NRT products will follow this standard.
