Land Surface Reflectance

Overview

The MODIS Surface Reflectance products provide an estimate of the surface spectral reflectance as it would be measured at ground level in the absence of atmospheric scattering or absorption. Low-level data are corrected for atmospheric gases and aerosols, yielding a level-2 basis for several higher-order gridded products.

In the 8-day product, each surface reflectance pixel contains the best possible L2G observation during an 8-day period as selected on the basis of high observation coverage, low view angle, the absence of clouds or cloud shadow, and aerosol loading.

Overview

The SNPP VIIRS Surface Reflectance products contain fractions of incoming radiation at particular spectral wavelengths that is reflected from Earth’s land surface. These surface reflectance estimates are derived from each of the twelve VIIRS reflective bands that include I1-I3, M1-M5, M7, M8, M10, and M11. The VIIRS L1B swath, which produces the L2 surface reflectance, contains six minutes of data. Surface reflectances for each pixel in the M-bands (750 m) and I-bands (375 m) are retrieved separately in the L2 product. Further spatial and temporal aggregation to 500 m and 1 km grids over daily or 8-day intervals yields the L2G and L3 surface reflectance products.
