The MODIS/Terra Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LST&E) products provide per-pixel temperature and emissivity values in a sequence of swath-based to grid-based global products. The MODIS/Terra LST&E 8-Day L3 Global Coarse Resolution (Short name: MOD11B2) is a tile of 8-Day LST and emissivities at 6 km spatial resolution in the Sinusoidal projection. It is generated by the day/night LST algorithm (Wan and Li, 1997).
The C6 8-day Level-3 LST product at 6 km spatial resolution is the average LST product of the daily LST product over the period of eight days. The simple average and composite method is used to average the valid LST and emissivity values in the MOD11B1 product over the 8-day period. The 8-day period does not cross the end of the data year, the first of day of any year starts a new 8-day period.
This algorithm is optimally used to separate ranges of atmospheric column water vapor and lower boundary air surface temperatures into tractable sub-ranges. The surface emissivities in bands 31 and 32 are estimated from land cover types. The MOD11B1 products are projected in a Sinusoidal grid by mapping the level-2 LST product (MOD11_L2) on 5 or 6 km Sinusoidal grids.
The C41 and C5 MODIS/Terra LST/E products, including the MOD11B1, are validated to Stage-2 with well-defined uncertainties over a range of representative conditions. The C5 MOD11_L2 product's acquisition range started March 5, 2000 (2000-065) and will continue until some time after the C6 reprocessing is complete.
