Description 2017-01-13T09:46:00Z
The MODIS Combined Aqua and Terra Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function and Albedo (BRDF/Albedo) suite of products are now being generated at the MODIS NRT processing system and are made available to the public through NASA's EOSDIS LANCE.

The NRT BRDF/Albedo processing uses the same science algorithm as the operational processing at MODAPS generating the product daily using all good quality observations of corrected reflectance acquired by the MODIS on-board Terra and Aqua. The daily product weights the data as a function of quality, observation coverage, and temporal distance from the day of interest. However, while the operational processing retrieves the product for the 9th day of the 16-day period, the NRT processing retrieves the product for the leading day of the 16-day period. The data day is identified in the local granule ID of the product. For the same data day, retrievals from the NRT have been verified to be of near science quality as operational product with at least 80% of retrievals to be within 1% of operational product at pixel level. The BRDF/Albedo suite of products include

  • MCD43A1N, Daily L3 BRDF/Albedo Model Parameters product that provides model parameters/coefficients (isotropic, volume and surface) for characterizing the BRDF of the surface
  • MCD43A3N, Daily L3 Albedo product that provides the black-sky and the white-sky albedo at local solar noon
  • MCD43A4N, Nadir BRDF Adjusted Reflectance product that provides view angle corrected Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectances (NBAR) at local solar noon.
  • MCD43A2N, BRDF/Albedo Quality product that provides full set of quality control flags for use in determining the quality of the retrievals in the MCD43A1N, MCD43A2N and MCD43A4N.
